Q. Why aren’t there more patrols on base housing? There are so many kids walking in the mornings and afternoon after school yet still so many are speeding.

A.

We take the safety of children in our community very seriously and conduct patrols in the McGuire, Dix and Lakehurst housing areas.  Our Defenders patrol hundreds of roads and multiple entrances on this large 42,000 acre installation. That said, we trust the eyes and ears of our residents and service members and if you have a specific situation or concern, I encourage you to contact 87th Security Forces Squadron at 609-754-6001 with your specific issue.  They will take a look at the situation and determine appropriate action.  We hope all drivers on base follow posted speed limit signs and are always on the lookout for pedestrians as we drive in our communities.

Q. I understand that as of 1-1-2020 veterans will have access to the commissary.  Is this correct? What are the requirements needed?

Per the Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018, as of 1 January 2020, Veterans with a verified disability below 100 percent as well as a Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC) card marked "Service Connected," "Purple Heart," or "Former POW," will have access to the commissaries, exchanges, and some MWR activities. VA registered primary caregivers of eligible veterans will also have access. Upon first visit to the installation, eligible veterans and caregivers must present their VHIC and official caregiver letter at the Visitor Control Center (VCC), along with a government issued ID or U.S. Passport. JBMDL VCCs are located at the Route 68 Gate, McGuire Main Gate, and the Lakehurst Main Gate. . The Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018 recognizes the service of those who endured captivity during conflict, were wounded in combat or sustained a service-connected disability and the individuals approved and designated as their caregivers under a formalized Department of Veterans Affairs caregiver program. In 2017, the Secretary of Defense determined that the addition of new patron categories to the commissary and exchange systems would support the growth of a robust customer base and help ensure the ability of both systems to provide benefits to members of the Armed Forces and their families.
