AMC commander, command chief visit JB MDL

By Airman 1st Class Jessica Blair

United States Air Force Gen. Maryanne Miller, Air Mobility Command commander and Chief Master Sgt. Terrence Greene, AMC command chief, visited Joint Base MDL Feb. 12-14 to visit with Airmen from the 305th Air Mobility Wing and the 87th Air Base Wing to receive an immersion into their missions.

During their visit, Miller and Greene spoke with Airmen from various units from both wings, and were able to get hands-on experience with all of their unique jobs, while also recognizing Airmen for their outstanding performance.

Miller and Greene held an all call with the Airmen to talk about the AMC vision and overall expectations. She spoke about the six priorities for AMC and how we can operate and achieve our mobility objectives in a contested and degraded environment. Miller stressed the need to achieve these priorities while taking into account our unique tasks and needs to achieve missions with global competitive threats.

“What does it mean to be contested and degraded?” asked Miller. “Cyber degraded, global positioning system degraded, each one of you performs a mission and will encounter a degraded environment if we would go into a near-peer conflict. So we need you all to think about what that would look like for you. For each one of us it’s a little bit different. It’s a culture of readiness that we are trying to instill.”

Miller spoke about the unique aspects of the joint base as a total force environment with five active duty, reserve and National Guard wings all contributing to Mobility Air Forces and the initiatives that can further strengthen and promote the total force.

“We work every day to strengthen the total force and that includes fellow services as we move along to strengthen the enterprise of the Department of Defense and our mission within it,” said Miller. “I’m always looking at how we best leverage our Airmen, the mission and the talent that we have out there and that is total force talent. We work every day on how we can better move the mission forward.”

“It’s all about taking care of you, taking care of the mission,” said Greene. “Making sure that we are prepared for the fight for tomorrow, our national security and the incredible things we do for America … around the world. That’s why we wear this uniform as our nation’s warriors.”

Additionally Miller, having met with various AMC units from around the joint base, spoke about how Joint Base MDL’s diverse mission sets contributes to the all over AMC mission.

“We contribute with the Expeditionary Center and how it supports the en-route system and contingency response and the airlifter and the tankers contribute every single day around the globe,” said Miller. “Everyone is doing their part and in many cases on this installation it’s a joint endeavor where everyone is contributing.”

Miller and Greene also visited the new innovation lab, where they experienced innovations coming from Joint Base MDL’s members.  While there, Greene emphasized how innovation is a priority.

“Innovation is an incredible force multiplier,” said Greene. “We need to continue to encourage that.”

“With the challenges that the Air Force faces today and in the future, every Airmen needs to consider the way they do their job and what capabilities they can use to be able to advance what they do in our Air Force,” said Miller. “Innovation is part of that, and every Airmen should come in and look at what’s in front of them and say ‘is there a better way or a different way.’”

Miller also hosted an aviator call, attended a mobility exercise brief and received a cyber-defense mission brief.

Prior to her departure, Miller also spoke about Air Force core values.
“I expect the same from someone who is right out of basic and someone who has a star on their shoulder. That is you serve, underpinned by our core values- that’s what the chief and I need from you and that’s what your country needs from you.”
