New Jersey State Attorneys that specialize in assisting service members with legal matters shared experiences and tips spoke to active, guard and reserve Airmen, Soldiers and Sailors here, Jan. 18.

Paul Fishman, U.S. Attorney, N.J., spoke to service members on different laws like the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, the Service members Civil Relief act and the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.

Each of the acts protect service members from early lease termination fees, high interest rates and protection from losing civilian jobs when returning from deployments.

“You may have a particular problem with a landlord or a car rental company that you think is a tiny little problem but could be effecting thousands of people,” said Fishman. “The bottom line is we can’t bring cases if we don’t know about them.”

Other base officials shared stories with the audience about needing legal assistance throughout their careers.

“There are things that happen in our lives as we move around the world, and one day you might find yourself hitting a cow and needing some help,” said Col. Frederick Thaden, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and 87th Air Base Wing commander. “If the base legal office can’t help you out, then you can call these folks.”
