JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- Two youths from the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Youth Centers competed against 18 other Boys and Girls Club members in New Jersey for the state’s top prize.
Kuanyah Norris, Dix Youth Center, was named the New Jersey military youth of the year, and Victor Oluwagbemi, McGuire Youth Center came in second place.
“Realizing that all the hard work and energy I put into speeches and essays, it finally pays off in the long run,” said Kuanyah. “It has been my dream to represent all military youth and be a great advocate for kids who do not have the voice they need.”
For winning, Kuanyah received $8,500 in college scholarships, while Victor was awarded $3,500 in scholarships for being runner-up.
“Not only was I the youngest of all 17 competitors, I was the only middle school student,” said Victor. “I was hoping to win, but considering the ages and grades of people I faced makes me feel accomplished.”
The youth of the year competition has Boys and Girls Clubs select an exceptional youth between 14-18 years of age who embodies leadership, service, academic excellence and a healthy lifestyle.
“The Dix Youth Program has provided me with an unlimited amount of opportunities. Staff members and youth make the environment more enjoyable,” Kuanyah said and was echoed by Victor. “My favorite part is the opportunity I get to give back to the community by volunteering and also helping the less privileged.”
Both winners’ parents expressed pride in their children for their effort in this competition.
“I feel truly blessed and proud to have such a promising child. Victor has had his mind set since third grade to work hard and earn scholarship(s) without getting any school loans,” said Olajumoke, Victor’s mom.
Kuanyah’s mom, Savannah Norris, shared a similar sentiment.
“It's awesome to know that she is taking the appropriate steps to secure the future that she wants. It's great to finally see the fruit of her labor,” she said.
