JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- The Joint Base MDL community came together to practice the four pillars of fitness during this year’s Comprehensive Fitness Day, Sept. 14.
The four pillars of the Air Force’s comprehensive fitness plan are physical, spiritual, mental and social fitness. Service members from all branches and civilian employees participated in events focused on these fundamental ideas during the Comprehensive Fitness Day here.
“Comprehensive Fitness Day provided a great opportunity to network and learn about the four pillars of fitness,” said Airman 1st Class Ervin Soriano, 87th Force Support Squadron career development outbound assignments personnel. “Sometimes we focus on one pillar more than the others, but a good balance is key to being a healthy individual.”
Participants had the opportunity to choose classes and events that suited them and their comprehensive fitness goals hosted by volunteers from across the installation. There were obstacle courses and runs for physical fitness, mindfulness and faith-based sessions for spiritual fitness, finance and life-skill classes for mental fitness and public speaking classes for social fitness.
“Finance can be a huge stressor in people’s lives,” said Tech. Sgt. Justin Stacy, 87th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter who taught a financial fitness class at Fire Station 1 here. “Staying on top of your finances can be beneficial to your mental health.”
While Comprehensive Fitness Day may be over, the community is encouraged to continue developing the four tenants of fitness year-round.
“It was an excellent day to focus on the things that I find are important to my fitness,” said Soriano. “I can’t think of anyone who didn’t either break a sweat or learn something. It’s important that we find time to focus on self-improvement.”
