New, improved dining facility opens at MDL

Surrounded by fast food chains, limited food options on base, long lines and crowds can make lunchtime at Joint Base MDL a trying time.

But for the members of Joint Base MDL, a healthier option is now available following the opening of the new dining facility on the Dix-side of the base.

When both sides of the new facility are operating, the brand-new 30,000 square foot facility can accommodate a total of 2,600 patrons in a 90-minute meal period, giving it more capacity than any other dining facility on the base, allowing two older facilities to shut down.

“It saves both the Army and the Air Force money,” said Capt. Sarah E. Wilson, 87th Force Support Squadron sustainment services flight commander. “It allows us to consolidate resources, operate out of one kitchen and still serve the same amount of people.”

The new facility offers a customary, cyclical menu with a variety of meal options; all with a set price for each meal instead of an a la carte menu. Each of the meals are prepared with modern equipment, allowing the food to be prepared faster, reducing wait time. The facility also offers a designated breast feeding room for nursing mothers.

“They offer a main salad bar, multiple grills and sandwich bars,” said Wilson. “They’re working on opening a rotisserie chicken station which will be something new and different that isn’t offered anywhere else on base.”

The new facility is fully operational and already served its first meal on Sept. 28. Patrons frequent this new facility because of its convenient locations, set prices and reputable staff.

“I love the DFAC and am the biggest fan of it,” said Army Specialist Kathleen A. Kirwan, 77th sustainment brigade combat medic and the first person to eat at the new facility. “It’s open for an hour and a half each meal, it’s just very centrally located and the people that work here are just amazing.”

The official grand opening is scheduled for Nov. 9, 2017. Hours of operation are: Breakfast- 0630-0800, lunch- 1130-1300, and dinner- 1700-1830.

The facility is open to all service members only.
