Chaplains to host Financial Peace University classes

Joint Base MDL Chaplains will be hosting an eight-week Financial Peace University course each Wednesday beginning April 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Dix chapel.

The eight-week course is designed to provide service members with the tools and key steps in their journey toward financial freedom. The classes will be available to all service members, their spouses and all civilian government employees.

“We use a DVD curriculum and then we break everybody up into small groups,” said Chaplain (Lt. j.g.) Kristoffer Alexander, Naval Support Activity-Lakehurst staff chaplain and curriculum facilitator. “That is just as important as the curriculum itself, because within the small group context people are able to discuss their current situation and get feedback from other people so that they know that they are not alone.”

The FPU classes focus on the ‘Seven Baby Steps’ that are designed to guide those with financial problems toward having more control over their money. Those in attendance can also address additional key concepts in their small groups, such as financial literacy, discipline and patience.

“It’s a great tool for every service member to put in their tool box and gives you the ability to manage your finances,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Wanet Chavez Espinoza, Naval Support Activity-Lakehurst religious programs specialist NCO-in-charge. “It teaches you about mortgages, thrift savings plan, life insurance, interest, how to budget, and how to pay off your debts.”

A First Sergeants Luncheon was held at Tommy B’s Community Activities Center earlier this month to educate leadership about the upcoming classes so that they can encourage and provide guidance in their units.

“When it’s time to go to war you won’t have to worry about being financially stable or if you’re going to be able to support your family,” said Chavez Espinoza.

Those wanting to attend should RSVP by April 9 by emailing Chaplain Alexander at Kristoffer.Alexander@us.af.mil. For questions or more information please contact Chaplain Alexander at (360)-989-4955.
