Service member spotlight: a solid base Published May 9, 2013 By Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Public Affairs JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- Sgt. 1st Class Herbert Keeley, 1st Battalion, 314th Infantry Regiment, Gunnery Company operations noncommissioned officer in charge, is the joint base's featured service member of the week. Keeley hails from Fort Worth, Texas. Q: Why did you join the military? A: I joined the Army because after graduating high school I knew I wasn't mature enough to go to college. I thought the Army would be a challenge and something that would keep me engaged. Q: What is your job and what is its impact on the mission? A: I am the operations noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge for, 1st Btn., 314th Inf. Reg., Gunnery Company. I ensure scheduling and taskings for training to happen and so we can run efficiently. It is our responsibility to train all service members on their weapon systems before deploying down range. Q: Do you have any past or current family members in military? A: None, I'm the first. Q: Who most inspires you? A: My wife. She handles the family so I can be successful at work. If I didn't have a solid base then I wouldn't be able to do what I do. Q: What is one thing you'd like your fellow service members to take away or understand about the military? A: Don't let yourself become complacent in your job or duty position. Always find events and training that can keep you relevant.
