87th CS enhances network through Windows 7 Published April 26, 2012 By 2nd Lt John Kust 87th Communications Squadron JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DEX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- The 87th Communications Squadron is implementing a base-wide Standard Desktop Configuration upgrade of operating systems to Windows 7 in a continuing initiative to align user services with enhanced network security and performance. The SDC will provide Air Force network users with improved secure communication in an age of ever-increasing cyber threats. One of the new features emphasized in the upgrade is the Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 compliant wireless communication capability, according to John Brook, 87th Communications Squadron chief of client services and network operations. Brook explained that the operating system also provides greater protection for data-at-rest (data in computer storage and not traversing the network) through an enhanced drive encryption function. Although Vista provided encryption through BitLocker, Windows 7 offers BitLocker To-Go, which allows users to encrypt any drive connected to a machine. Windows 7 also offers numerous security upgrades that are often unnoticed by everyday users. "Windows 7 resolves previous problems between Windows XP and certain security add-ons - namely the Host-Based Security System's McAfee Agent and Host Intrusion Protection System, which are responsible for virus scans and restricting unauthorized services and applications," said Brook. "There is also a significant set of features that Microsoft has streamlined to assist with installing updates, and Windows 7 offers patch-update stability that was not available with earlier operating systems." The SDC will also give AF network users an improved working environment in addition to providing improved network security and performance. "From the user perspective, Windows 7 offers a better desktop experience," said 1st Lt. Dempsey Bird, 87th CS operations flight commander. Users will have the ability to pin programs, access shortcuts with Jump Lists, and view open windows in new and more convenient ways, because Windows 7 uses significantly less memory than its predecessor, users will also experience overall improved computer performance. Computers with Windows 7 will also receive Microsoft Outlook 2010 as part of the standard desktop configuration. Microsoft has advertised the newest version of Outlook will provide users with new features, including enhanced productivity with Backstage View, email cleanup with conversation view, and the ability to organize notes and information in one place with OneNote. Office OneNote, which is like a free-form information gathering/collection system, allows users to keep information as they would in a notebook - including the ability to collaborate information with other people. The SDC upgrade ensures JB MDL's role in the ongoing efforts to integrate security with mission operations. The installation will be conducted through June 18.
