87th DS provides tips for healthy teeth

Studies have shown numerous diseases affecting the entire body can be diagnosed in the mouth during annual routine dental checkups.

Conditions such as cardiovascular disease, premature birth, diabetes and HIV can be diagnosed early since they may manifest changes in the mouth.

One example is the link between heart disease and bone loss around tooth sockets. Diabetes alters the patients' immune systems and therefore increases the risk for inflammation of gum tissues and oral infections. Furthermore, HIV shows initial signs through spontaneous bleeding of gum tissues and oral yeast infections. Expectant mothers whose hormone levels are different than usual have an increased risk of contracting bacteria which can lead to gum and bone disease. This gum disease, or periodontal disease, can lead to premature and low-birth weight babies.

The relationship between dental health and overall medical health is just one important reason to maintain regular dental visits. During your next dental check up ask the following questions:

-- "What warning signs should I be looking out for in my mouth that may suggest possible disease?"

-- "Have you noticed any warning signs in my mouth that I should relate to my medical physician?"

-- "What other oral hygiene techniques can I use to improve my dental health?"
