Oral piercings are becoming more popular among young adults. This type of art can potentially be harmful if not managed correctly.

Habitually playing with piercings can cause the jewelry to chip teeth and also result in gum recession. Damage to the front teeth could potentially look unsightly and cause problems during speech and eating.

Tongue piercings have also been known to contribute to hygiene issues. Oral infections could develop if the tongue and mouth are not kept clean. Some other potentially bothersome issues could include; bad breath, sore teeth and increased sensitivity.

Individuals who choose to use tongue piercings must brush the tongue as well as clean the jewelry inserted in the tongue after each meal. The American Dental Association strongly urges patients to review all the possible health risks before undergoing any oral-piercing procedures.

To avoid potential infections, the ADA highly recommends checking the regulations and sterility of the instruments which will be used to perform the surgery.
