Motorcyclists prepare for inspections

The sun is out, beaches are still open and it's a good time to get out and go for a motorcycle ride. Nearing the end of summer, motorcycle riders can still be seen on the road on a regular basis, both off and on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

Riders rarely think about getting into a mishap or getting seriously injured. During the summer months, motorcycle mishaps rise due to many different factors: inexperience, risky riding, alcohol, speed, distractions and fatigue. Fortunately, all of these factors can be prevented and can lead to fewer accidents during this time of year.

Before operating a motorcycle, make sure all personal protective equipment is serviceable. In accordance with DOD Instruction 6055.04, the mandatory PPE for operating or riding as a passenger on a motorcycle includes:

-Helmets - certified to meet Department of Transportation standards, properly fastened under the chin.
-Goggles and face shields - impact or shatter resistant goggles or full-face shield properly attached to the helmet.
-Sturdy footwear - leather boots or over-the-ankle shoes.
-Clothing - long sleeved shirt or jacket, long trousers and full-fingered gloves.
- Garment visibility - a brightly colored outer upper garment during the day and reflective upper garment during the night.

No rider should ever feel safe enough to ride without the mandatory PPE.

The joint base leadership and Joint Base Safety Office remind all JB MDL community members to get proper training prior to operating a motorcycle. It's imperative riders of all skill levels are fully qualified and bikes are ready for riding. For active-duty military personnel, training is not optional, it's mandatory.

There is always a risk when operating a motorcycle - poor preparation amplifies that risk. Summertime can be a challenging time for motorcyclists. It is wise to remember it can take time to get back into the riding mode and to the skill level riders were the previous summer.

Joint Base Safety will be at the gates Sept. 12 through 16, ensuring all motorcycle operators and passengers have all required PPE and a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course completion card in their possession, pertinent to the type of motorcycle they are operating.

The base also offers several motorcycle safety foundation courses. Contact the Joint Base Safety Office at 732-323-2525 at Lakehurst or 754-7233 for McGuire and Dix, for additional information.
