Portable fire extinguishers: first line of defense Published Aug. 18, 2011 By Robert Lemanski 87th Civil Engineer Squadron JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- When properly used, portable fire extinguishers can extinguish many small fires before the fire spreads or while waiting for the arrival of the fire department. In all cases, the Joint Base Fire Department should be notified as soon as any fire is discovered by calling 9-1-1. Portable fire extinguishers are divided into four categories, based on different types of fires, each with a numerical rating that serves as a guide for the amount of fire the extinguisher can handle. Containing a limited amount of fire extinguishing material, the proper use of the fire extinguisher is critical. Operating instructions are provided on the side of the fire extinguisher describing how to use the extinguisher in case of an emergency. Facility managers are responsible to log and complete monthly spot checks on all facility fire extinguishers. The spot inspection will include ensuring the fire extinguisher has not been discharged, damaged and remains in proper working condition. Maintenance, servicing and recharging of fire extinguishers shall be performed by certified contractor on annual intervals from the time of hydrostatic test or when specifically indicated by an inspection. The fire prevention office upon request by facility managers or squadron safety representative will provide National Fire Prevention Association certified fire extinguisher training to joint base personnel. Upon assignment, this training is required annually in accordance with Air Force Occupational Safety and Health Standards 91-501. For additional information regarding joint base fire instructions see McGuire Air Force Base Instructions 32-2001 or call Joint Base Fire Prevention office at 754-2226.
