Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is celebrating Earth Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Laurel Pond Recreation Area on Dix.

The event is geared toward providing the community with important information on how to have less of a negative impact on the environment.

"Attendees can learn what they can do to make Earth a better planet and how to lighten their footprints or boot prints if they are in the military," said Roger Smith, 87th Civil Engineer Squadron Environmental Flight natural resource management scientist.

Many units are hosting an array of activities for all age groups. These activities include: canoeing, tree climbing, nature walks, a compass instructional class, puppet shows, pollination station, as well as static and informative displays from local nature centers and parks. The boy and girl scout clubs, New Jersey fire services and the United Communities will be just a few of the groups participating in Earth Day. U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team and a Lyme disease prevention expert will be speaking at the event as well.

Local car dealerships are bringing hybrid vehicles to display and inform attendees of the positive impact the vehicles have on the environment. Smoky the Bear and Woodsy the Owl will be on hand for pictures as well.

"Community members should enjoy all the activities and information so when they leave the pond, they can leave a smaller footprint on the environment," said Crystal Diaz, 87th CES administration support.

Attendees will receive a gift bag filled with a water bottle, recycled frisbee, a T-shirt and information pamphlets on how to protect the environment. The event will end with a tree-planting ceremony in honor of Arbor Day.

All community members are invited to attend and those with base access do not need to preregister. Call 562-5428 for more information or to register for the event.
