Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and 87th Air Base Wing Commander Gina Grosso was promoted to the rank of brigadier general here today during an official ceremony.

"Colonel Grosso is not receiving this promotion as a pat on the back, but as a call to succeed at the next level," said Brig. Gen. William Bender, U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center commander and presiding official for ceremony. "Her ability to inspire others is what makes her who she is."

She has served in various leadership positions at the Pentagon and commanded the 87th ABW since March 2009 and the joint base since October 2009.

JB MDL is America's premier joint warfighting base and the installation is home to a variety of Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and state and federal missions. It remains the only tri-service joint base in the Department of Defense.

"I have served as a colonel for seven years in five different O-6 positions and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst was the tipping point for my promotion," said Grosso. "Serving all of you and especially the young servicemembers has been the highlight of my career."

Grosso became a commissioned officer in October 1986 after graduating from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa. Grosso, a Virginia native, was nominated for promotion to the rank of brigadier general by the president of the United States Dec. 14, and was confirmed by the Senate Dec. 23.

More than 300 individuals to include community leaders and base leadership attended the ceremony.
