Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Sailor Master-at-Arms Senior Chief (Surface Warfare) Marc Pitbladdo received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal Jan. 25, for his heroic and courageous act after placing himself in harm's way to save three people involved in a single vehicle accident.

On April 5, 2008, Pitbladdo was traveling southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike to his monthly duty at the Naval Operations Support Center-Dix, when he noticed a cloud of black smoke coming from an overturned vehicle on the northbound divider. Springing into action, Pitbladdo quickly pulled over and phoned in the accident to 911.

Without proper emergency equipment, Pitbladdo began diverting traffic away from the accident scene until another motorist was able to assist. With traffic safely directed, the senior chief focused on three alert victims trapped in the smoked engulfed vehicle.

Without regard to his own safety, he approached the overturned vehicle and worked to free the three occupants. Once they were out of the vehicle, Pitbladdo utilized his experience as an emergency medical technician to administer basic first aid until the State Police and emergency medical services personnel arrived.

"For me it was like riding a bike, you never forget," said Pitbladdo. "The training always kicks in when you don't expect it to."

Pitbladdo's quick thinking and professional experience ensured the safety of the victims involved. His courage and selflessness clearly merit the recognition that is bestowed by award of the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Congratulations Pitbladdo for your distinguished and heroic actions. Bravo Zulu Senior Chief.
