Sgt. 1st Class Gregg remembered Published Jan. 13, 2011 By James L. Hodges Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Public Affairs JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- As the late morning sun filled the Soldiers Chapel, more than 100 mourners gathered to remember their co-worker, friend and loved one, Sgt. 1st Class Carl L. Gregg. The Jan. 5 memorial began with an invocation by Army Chaplain (Capt.) Amy Noble, Army Support Activity-Dix, Mobilization Readiness Chapel, followed by remarks from Army Capt. Robert Crymes, Warrior Transition Unit. After a video tribute of family photos, the mourners were invited to speak of their memories of Gregg. Many people took to the podium and spoke of Gregg's love for his family, inspiration to those around him and his many colorful sayings. "He had an unwavering moral compass and the courage to stand by his convictions," said Sharon Brady, Army Wounded Warrior Advocate. "He had a strong sense of duty and was fiercely loyal to his battle buddies and country. Sgt. Gregg lived up to the Army values." Gregg began his military career in 1974 serving in the Infantry prior to his assignment with the 353rd Civil Affairs Command, Fort Wadsworth, N.Y. as a Civil Affairs NCO. Gregg dedicated 36 years of service to his country in the U.S. Army and his awards include but not limited to the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with bronze star, Global War on Terrorism, Humanitarian Service Award, Oversea Ribbon (2) and the Army Service Ribbon. Gregg passed on Dec. 22, after battling with a long illness. He is survived by his wife Joann Gregg and his three children Brian, Heather and Justin.
