The Air Force requires every enlisted servicemember whether active duty, guard or reserve to earn the Community College of the Air Force degree before promoting to the senior enlisted ranks.

The CCAF degree is a compilation of 64 credit hours which includes basic training and technical school credits as well as general study credits.

Airmen with college semester hours can send their transcripts to the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Institutions of Higher Learning Education and Training Center for credit toward their CCAF degree.

"Most students with an associate's degree can apply the majority of their general study credit hours to the CCAF as well as some of their other college credits," said Gloria Basa, education center CCAF advisor.

The education center offers the Within 15 Program, which helps Airmen, who are within 15 credit hours of obtaining their degree, finish the required classes as quickly as possible.

Along with the Within 15 Program, the education center offers the College Level Examination Program better known as CLEP and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests Monday through Thursday at 9:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. through the Thomas Edison State College. Both tests are comparable to the final or end of course examination in undergraduate courses and only take an hour to complete. Each test earns an Airman at least one credit hour and as much as three, which goes towards 30 credits hours of the 64 needed to earn a CCAF degree.

"We advise Airmen to come and meet with Ms. Basa and myself to set up a plan to complete your CCAF degree," said Gaylor Simons, education counselor. "There are a lot of different ways we can help you achieve this degree and get it done before promotion to the senior enlisted ranks."

The next CCAF degree graduating class is scheduled for June 8 and the cut-off date for Airmen to have all transcripts posted to the CCAF progress report is Feb. 25.

"By earning the CCAF degree Airmen show career progression and this sets them up for success rather than having to rush to get it done the last minute or even holding up a promotion," said Basa.

Earning a CCAF degree is not the only thing Airmen can apply their credits towards. Most four year institutions accept the general education courses required for a CCAF degree. Airmen interested in achieving an associates, bachelors or even masters degree can look into the eight different higher education institutions that offer classes at the education center.

For more information on obtaining a CCAF degree or Airmen with education related questions can visit the JB MDL Institutions of Higher Learning Education and Training Center located at Bldg. 3829, Falcon Courts North Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or call 754-3019 and ask for Gloria Basa or Gaylor Simons.
