Tony Horton, creator of the P-90X workout, visited Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Nov. 8 at the Griffith Field House where he instructed two 45-minute warrior workouts with community members and spoke with participants.

"I came here to help motivate servicemembers that are struggling to pass their services' physical fitness tests and to inspire them to achieve year-round fitness," said Horton.

The workout program is geared toward providing participants an entire body workout from head to toe. There are no weights or equipment used, just a set of continuous exercises ranging from punching to squats meant to keep the heart rate elevated. The program allows the everyday person to get an intense workout without having to buy special equipment or even go to the gym.

"The warrior workout really gets you moving, not just your upper body but your legs as well so that you don't miss any muscles," said Horton.

With each workout, Horton explained the importance of not only exercising consistently, but also eating healthy.

"I want all of you to cut out fast food at least once a week and try putting healthy foods such as blueberries and almond milk into your body and feel the positive effects it has on you," said Horton.

Dr. Neal Sundberg, military fitness instructor at JB MDL, invited Horton to JB MDL after seeing a video of him performing his fitness workout with servicemembers at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

"I teach a similar fitness class as Horton's and wanted to bring him here to provide servicemembers motivation and show that this really works," said Sundberg., who instructs the Show Up and Shape Up Class at the Griffith Field House every Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. He will teach the same fitness class at the McGuire Sports and Fitness center each Friday at 6:30 a.m. starting in December.
