Lakehurst gates re-open after security incidents Published June 21, 2010 Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Public Affairs Office JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- The Lakehurst gates were closed from approximately 10 to 11 a.m. as a precautionary security measure after two simultaneous incidents occurred here. The incidents occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. Since then, all gates on the installation have been re-opened. The first incident was at Lakehurst's main gate when a commercial delivery vehicle tried to gain access to the installation. When asked by security, the driver admitted to carrying a personal handgun in the vehicle. The driver was cooperative throughout the entire process and subsequently issued a federal citation. The second incident occurred at Lakehurst's commercial gate when a guard and patrol unit heard what they thought was gun fire. When responding to the gun fire, they saw an individual around the vicinity of which the gun fire came from. The suspect was ordered to halt and then fled. However, at this time the report has been unsubstantiated. Through a quick and timely response by the 87th Security Forces Squadron, the joint base was able to ensure the incident was quickly investigated and contained. More importantly, joint base personnel were in no danger at any time. "Due to the quick actions and response from our security personnel, security procedures were not breached during either incident," said Col. Gina Grosso, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst commander. "All actions taken throughout this time, were precautionary in nature to ensure the security and safety of the joint base."
