Four members from the 87th Security Forces Squadron are among the more than 130 Airmen from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst competing in Rodeo 2009 at McChord Air Force Base, Wash., July 19-24.

The 87th SFS team will be among more than 2,500 participants and 100 teams from Air Mobility Command bases across the country, as well as international and U.S. Marine Corps teams in the competition.

The biannual, multinational readiness competition tests teams in the core AMC capabilities of air drop, air refueling, aeromedical evacuation and cargo delivery operations. Rodeo also focuses on ground operations, including security forces, combat control, aerial port, and maintenance.

Master Sgt. Chris Wright, 87th SFS Police Services superintendent, has stepped up to be the security forces team leader and has chosen three other security forces Airmen to create a "well-rounded" four-man team. The team members are Staff Sgt. Peter Midura, Staff Sgt. Steven Pedersen, and Senior Airman Dana Corriveau.

"The team has only been assembled for two weeks, and we've been training every day, as much as possible," Sergeant Wright said. "However, I built this team based on their self-motivation and the time they have already put into training on their own accord."

Training for the team includes "everything from PT to the obstacle course, to firing tactics to long range precision rifle fire and marksmanship," Sergeant Pedersen said.

In addition to diligent training, past experience is adding to the team's advantage. Sergeant Wright and Sergeant Midura represented Team McGuire during Rodeo 2007, where they won the combat challenge course.

During Rodeo, security forces teams will be tested on a combat endurance course and rifle and handgun competitions. The events are fast-paced and exciting - a fun spectator sport, Sergeant Wright said.

The team members have high expectations for their performance at this year's competition and "expect to come back with a win in something," Sergeant Wright said.

Along with excitement for the competition itself, the team is happy to be representing Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

"It's kind of exciting to be representing not only JB MDL, but the 87th [Air Base Wing]," Sergeant Pedersen said. "We're the first 87th ABW team to go to Rodeo -- so we're looking forward to 'repping' not only the Joint Base and security forces, but also the 87th ABW."
