This week in McGuire AFB history Published July 1, 2009 By Gary Boyd 305th Air Mobility Wing/87th Air Base Wing historian JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- This week in 1942, Fort Dix Army Air Forces Base was assigned to the 1st Air Force, where the base supported deployment processing to Europe and Anti-submarine patrols off the Atlantic Coast. This week in 1957, McGuire completed its pivotal role in Operation SAFE HAVEN I/II--the evacuation of Hungarian Freedom Fighters and their families. From Dec. 11, 1956 to July 1, 1957, McGuire handled more than 10,000 refugees on 173 flights from Europe--without a single accident.
