March is National Nutrition Month Published March 17, 2009 By McGuire Health and Wellness Center McGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. -- What does that mean exactly? It is a great time to stop and take a look at just how healthy your eating habits really are and what steps you might be able to take to improve your eating habits. If you're not quite sure where to start, the Health and Wellness Center is here to help. The HAWC has some great programs and classes going on. The HAWC has a registered dietitian on staff who provides numerous educational classes to help you get started. For the month of March, the following classes (open to all Tricare beneficiaries) will be offered: · March 23, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.: Healthy Eating -- This class is a great starting point for anyone interested in learning more about healthy eating, portion sizes, food labels and calories. · March 25, 12 to 1 p.m.: Lunch & Learn: Food for Thought -- This will be a fun presentation aimed to get you thinking about food choices and exactly what is in that fast food you enjoy so much. Bring a lunch with you. In addition to the classes, the HAWC RD has a page on the public McGuire Web site, at http://www.mcguire.af.mil/nutrition.asp, that features monthly recipes and a link to "Ask the Dietitian," where you can send in questions via e-mail. Each week in March, the registered dietitian is also featuring daily nutrition tips in the Warrior Spirit. Are you up for the challenge to get back on track with a healthy lifestyle in March? Finally, the HAWC also has an exciting contest to share. The HAWC staff is looking for your best, healthy and tasty recipes to enter into a recipe booklet that will be shared with the community. E-mail your recipe to megan.smith2@mcguire.af.mil with "Recipe Contest Entry" in the subject line. Recipes in the following categories will be accepted, including appetizers, salads/soups, main dishes (can be breakfast/lunch/dinner), and desserts. The deadline to submit entries is April 10. Multiple submissions will be accepted. For any other nutrition needs, feel free to stop in the HAWC (located just inside the McGuire Fitness Center). To register for one of the classes listed above, call (609) 754-2462.
