Practice good dental health year-round Published Feb. 24, 2009 By 305th Dental Squadron McGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. -- February is the time of the year where energy is focused on providing oral health instructions and education to children in the Team McGuire community. Keep in mind, teaching children the importance of brushing and flossing at an early age, in addition to visiting their dentist regularly, will promote a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. The 305th Dental Squadron has presented National Children's Dental Health Month activities throughout February and would like to remind parents to continue good oral hygiene with their children on a regular basis. Since cavities are the most common disease in children, the 305th DS would like to offer a few tips to prevent them. It is important to brush three times a day with soft toothbrush bristles, in conjunction with flossing daily, to promote a lifetime of healthy gums and teeth. It is also important to visit the dentist on an annual basis for check-ups. If you live in an area where the tap water does not have fluoride, your dentist may prescribe daily fluoride tablets for your children. Fluoride is used to strengthen teeth and prevent decay. Follow your dentist's prescription as over fluoridation may cause teeth stain. Ultimately, a diet high in sugar such as candies and sodas are cavity culprits. After consumption, immediately rinse with water if toothbrush kit is not within reach. Keeping oral health in mind keeps the overall health of children in optimum condition.
