There are only days left to sign the online resolution to become tobacco-free in 2009.

The DoD Quit Tobacco - Make Everyone Proud Web site, www.ucanquit2.org, has several innovative tools to help servicemembers reach their goal. McGuire's Health and Wellness Center staff is encouraging Airmen to make the online pledge to be tobacco-free.

"Most tobacco users tell me they want to quit, but they aren't sure how. This would be a great first step," said Megan Smith, HAWC health education program manager. "Ideally, what we like to see is members who take the pledge to quit now and then develop a realistic plan for quitting that involves help from the HAWC, a healthcare provider, Web sites like www.ucanquit2.org, and family and friends."

Signing the pledge and choosing to be tobacco-free has many benefits.

"There are a million reasons to quit using tobacco - the reduction in health risks such as cardiovascular disease and cancer, the money you can save, and more," said Megan Smith, HAWC health education program manager. "People who have taken the challenge to quit and have been successful report they felt a sense of accomplishment against something that has had a hold over them for so many years," she said. "Take control of your life, and make the decision to quit - show tobacco who's boss for a change."

Ms. Smith said having a strong motivation to quit using tobacco is key to overcoming the addiction.

"If you are thinking about quitting tobacco, my challenge to you is to find something that truly motivates you from within and use that as your strength when dealing with cravings," she said. "Your motivation has to be your own in order to be successful. If you're ready and motivated, you can quit - it just takes a little patience and support from those around you.

"Make the choice to sign the pledge, then come to the HAWC and learn how to get started," Ms. Smith said. "You owe it to yourself to choose to make 2009 the year you quit tobacco."
