Well, kind of. The Fort Dix Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Center is hosting Apollo Night Nov. 21, 8 p.m., at Club Dix. Contestants for the talent show can register until noon Nov. 19. "Apollo Night will offer a wonderful opportunity for servicemembers (and their guests) to showcase their talent," said Jackie Holliday, Fort Dix marketing director. "It's also a chance for someone to take home $500!" Apollo Night will be hosted by Capone, Showtime at the Apollo's host. Ray Chew and the Crew from the Apollo will be the band. The winner (singer, dancer, comedian, etc.) of Apollo night will take $500 cash and have a chance to open for Patti Labelle Dec. 2 at Club Dix. All McGuire, Fort Dix, and Lakehurst personnel and family members are encouraged to attend the show, even if it's not to compete. "For performers, Apollo Night will be a great chance to be seen by a few entertainment professionals," said Bob Vogt, Fort Dix community recreation director. "For the audience, it's going to be a great night of inexpensive entertainment and a chance to cheer on your favorite contestant." Other performers during Apollo Night will include Bruckup (Valentino), International Dance Sensations, Lombard Twins, and Mirra, former Apollo Night winners. "We have tried to make this a special program - we have Airmen and Soldiers competing," Mr. Vogt said. "... About the only thing we could not do was bring the Apollo Theater from Harlem, N.Y.!" Contestant performances cannot exceed six minutes. The artist must provide any background music by 6 p.m. Nov. 21. Props or musical instruments must be provided by the artist. The winner will be determined by an audience vote (applause and cheers); the host makes the final decision. Tickets for the show are $10.Tickets can be purchased in advance at Club Dix, the FMWR Headquarters Bldg. 6043, or the night of the show at the door.
