Operation Homefront is extending the deadline to apply for scholarships totaling $50,000 to active duty and reserve military spouses.

The 33 scholarships may be used for study in a university, college, accredited trade school, certificate program, vocational school or community college. The funds may be used on tuition, fees and books, and will be paid directly to the educational institution.

The winner of the Grand Prize Scholarship will receive $5,000; two first-place award winners will receive $2,500; 10 second-place award winners will receive $2,000; 20 runners up will each receive $1,000. Runner up awards will be offered if Operation Homefront receives at least 100 essay submissions.

A panel of judges will review all applications. The essay is worth a total of 40 points. Applicants must follow instructions carefully and complete the application in its entirety to be considered.

ELIGIBILITY:

1. The applicant must be a legal spouse of a military member currently on active duty status, whether active duty, Reserve or a member of the National Guard. Members of the Reserve or National Guard are considered active duty as long as they have served at least 180 combined days of full time duty since January 1, 2005.

2. The applicant must be accepted by an institution of higher education (college, university or vocational school) or expect to be accepted by the same.

3. The applicant must apply the funds to an accredited trade school, certificate program, vocational school, university or college within 24 months of receiving the award. This scholarship is not available for post-graduate education. All funds will be paid directly to the educational institution by Operation Homefront upon verification of enrollment and eligibility status. If the recipient is enrolled in an accredited institution at the end of the 24th month period and has not fully utilized the award, the recipient may continue to use the remaining balance provided the recipient continuously remains enrolled in at least 3 semester units of course study as defined by the educational institution.

Completed applications must be post-marked no later than Aug. 15, 2008. For more information, go to www.operationhomefront.net/pdf/OH_CH%20Schlshp%20App.pdf.
