Newly-renovated Airmen's Attic now open Published July 9, 2008 By Senior Airman Danielle Johnson 305th Air Mobility Wing public affairs MCGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. -- Wing leadership and base personnel will celebrate the reopening of the newly-renovated Airmen's Attic at a ribbon-cutting ceremony here July 11. "We are thrilled to reopen the Airmen's Attic for our Airmen and their families," said Valerie Fioretta, Airmen & Family Readiness Center community readiness technician. "This was truly a community effort and could not have been done without the hard work and dedication of our active-duty and civilian volunteers." Volunteers from the McGuire 56, various Team McGuire units as well as civilians worked to knock-down walls, build new ones and thoroughly upgrade the Airmen's Attic, a place for Airmen and their families to get various household items such as furniture, baby strollers, clothes and cookware to name a few. "We did a complete renovation - knocked down a few walls, installed carpeting, added changing rooms, put new shelves up," said Veronica Guzman Bass, who has volunteered at the attic since May. "It looks a lot better now - it's a lot cleaner and a lot brighter. Our customers have told us it makes them feel better." "Although the Airmen's Attic is primarily for E-5's and below, I would like to remind everyone that it is open to 'All Ranks' on the last Monday of each month," said Ms. Fioretta. "So, stop by and visit us soon!" The A&FRC is also seeking volunteers to work at the attic, which is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help sort through donations and stock shelves as well as man the desk. Donations are always accepted, though donated items must be in good condition. "I think (volunteering at the Airmen's Attic) is great," said Mrs. Bass. "They (the A&FRC) help you pay for daycare, and it really makes you feel good helping people. I would really recommend it for anyone - stay at home spouses and even children 16 and up are able to help during summer breaks. The commander is very supportive of the Airmen's Attic. It's a great little family we have here." For more information about the Airmen's Attic or to volunteer, contact the A&FRC at (609) 754-3154.
