Back to basics, standards: 305 LRS seminar teaches ORM, leadership principles

By Airman 1st Class Rebekah Phy 305th Air Mobility Wing public affairs

Members from the 305th Logistics Readiness Squadron here recently attended a mentorship class hosted by the squadron's Top IV.

The focus of the class was to discuss and learn about leadership and Operational Risk Management principles and situations. "Twelve O'Clock High", a black-and-white classic World War II film, was also shown during the class.

"The 305 LRS, like many squadrons, is dealing with a lot of stress due to a high-deployment rate and a high-operations tempo all while we continue to fight the Global War on Terrorism," said Master Sgt. John Bangs, 305 LRS NCO in charge of war readiness. "The mentorship classes are usually designed for the 305 LRS Top IV specifically, but I felt the subject matter was beneficial for all to learn from."

Sergeant Bangs said the movie was chosen because it reflects many situations Airmen are currently experiencing. He also wanted to tie-in the historical factor of the "Can Do" wing. "The overall goal was to help the 305 LRS get back to basics and standards in all military endeavors," Sergeant Bangs said.

During the movie, Sergeant Bangs asked the troops to reflect on their specific jobs, leadership styles and stress levels and to take notes on how difficult situations were handled in the film. "I hope the Airmen learned something new about themselves, their commitment levels and, ultimately, became better wingmen."
