McGuire personnel urged to conserve energy

Tough times call for immediate action.

As one of his top three priorities, Col. Balan Ayyar, 305th Air Mobility Wing commander, is urging all Team McGuire members to help reduce base energy consumption, particularly during times of increased energy costs.

"Alongside our commitment to mission excellence and developing the next generation of Airmen, we are committed to preserving our nation's resources," Colonel Ayyar said. "At this time of increased energy costs, our resources warrant your immediate action."

Colonel Ayyar has set McGuire's energy goal at a 20 percent decrease by year end. McGuire's energy consumption has decreased 15.8 percent from the 2003 baseline.
Every Airman can help conserve energy -- small changes can equal big results. Below are several tips to help reduce energy consumption throughout the base.

· Set facility thermostats to 78 degrees. Did you know that for each degree under 78 degrees, McGuire's costs increase $135,000 throughout the cooling season?

· Turn off lights when not in use, and close unoccupied rooms.

· Use natural lighting when possible.

· Power down/unplug electronic equipment (including power strips and chargers) after use.

· Clean/replace air filters regularly.

· Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. CFLs use 75 percent less energy and last up to 10 times longer!
