McGuire Earth Week: 'Conserve Resources for a Brighter Future' Published April 8, 2008 By 2nd Lt. Michael Zudic 305th Civil Engineer Squadron McGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. -- McGuire AFB will celebrate its inaugural Earth Week April 21-25. The 2008 theme is "Conserve Resources for a Brighter Future." As energy and natural resources become more scarce, energy must be conserved as much as possible. In light of this issue, Earth Week will highlight energy and resource conservation issues and ways to reduce the human footprint. Base personnel are encouraged to participate in the week's activities around base and to learn how they can contribute to a brighter future. Earth Week will kickoff April 21 with the first-ever presentation of the Resource Conservation Award. The $5K quarterly award will be granted to the McGuire AFB unit that makes the greatest strides in resource conservation. On April 22, everyone is welcome to attend a free barbecue, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the base Recycling Center, Bldg 2321. The first 500 attendees will receive a free t-shirt and reusable grocery bag. The base falconer will display his birds for all to enjoy. April 23 is Energy Awareness Day, and base personnel are highly encouraged to carpool, ride a bike, or walk to work. Several local energy and utility companies will be present at the BX lobby and McGuire fitness center, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to advertise how to reduce energy consumption and save money. Arbor Day will be celebrated April 24, and multiple trees will be planted around base to green the landscape and advocate resource conservation. McGuire AFB and United Communities are teaming up April 25 for a recycling drive. Awards will be presented to the top-three residences in base housing who pick up the most recyclables and refuse. Only through everyone's effort to reduce energy consumption and conserve resources will the next generations have a brighter future! For more information about Earth Week, call 2nd Lt.
