AFRC programs benefit Airmen, families Published Nov. 19, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Rebekah Phy 305th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs MCGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. -- The Airmen and Family Readiness Center, formerly the Family Support Center, offers a variety of services, educational programs and referral services to military and community agencies designed to meet the specific needs of Team McGuire. "The AFRC has assigned a community relations consultant or technician to each squadron who is able to personalize any class, workshop or individual consultation to meet the needs of their squadron," said Erica Zeiger, AFRC community readiness consultant. "Our goal is to help you adjust and prepare for the unique challenges presented by the Air Force lifestyle and the McGuire mission." There are several programs McGuire personnel and families can become involved with at the AFRC. Programs like the Phoenix Spouse; a squadron support network for deployed member's families in each unit, is run by the AFRC. In each squadron, a spouse is chosen and trained to be the liaison between the squadron and unit families during a loved ones deployment. The AFRC also offers the Heart Link Program, which is an Air Force-wide program offering spouses an informative exploration into the military lifestyle. There are also plenty of opportunities for base personnel and family members to volunteer, donate and give back through the AFRC. Mrs. Zeiger said the AFRC is always looking for volunteers, and several activities are available to get involved with. The Airmen's Attic, also run by the AFRC, offers new and pre-owned infant items, children's clothing, toys, furniture, etc., to active-duty Airmen (E-1 through E-5) and their families from community donations. Volunteers are needed to help run the shop, and donations are always accepted. Similarly, the Food Pantry, located in the AFRC, provides emergency food supplies to eligible members and their families, also supported through community donations. Education and career resources and services are also offered through the AFRC to eligible members. Financial classes and seminars are also held at the AFRC several times each month. The Computer Resource Center provides access to computers, software and more to assist with a variety of needs, including a touch typing tutor, word processing and scholarship and grant programs. Career focus provides education and guidance to enhance the marketability and employability of military members and their families. Seminars include career planning, improving job search skills, networking with potential employers and more. The AFRC offers several programs designed to benefit Airmen and their families. Whether it's career, education, finances or fun, the AFRC is here to help and support McGuire's mission and personnel. "The AFRC touches every aspect of military life, including relocation, deployments, careers, etc.," Mrs. Zeiger said. "Our programs impact not just the Airmen, but their families as well. Our center may be able to help you adjust and thrive in the military community." For more information or to volunteer, call the AFRC at (609) 754-3154.
