Homeland Security Education Published Aug. 6, 2007 By 2 Lt. Michael Hogg 305 AMW Public Affairs MCGUIRE AFB, N.J. -- An active duty Air Force officer has teamed up with a local college here to establish a curriculum for a degree in homeland security starting this fall. Maj. Mark Anarumo, Director of Homeland Security Education and Training, along with the Federal Air Marshals, Transportation Security Administration and Stockton College in Pomona N.J., have developed a homeland security degree program within the criminal justice master's program. "The program's mix of classroom and distance learning opportunities, and its close proximity to McGuire, make it an excellent option for members of the McGuire, Fort Dix and Naval Air Station Lakehurst communities," said Major Anarumo. As more homeland security missions are tasked out to our military members, this type of degree takes on a new level of relevance. "U.S military formations are, after all, critical components of the homeland security structure at the local, regional and national levels," said Major Anarumo. The homeland security master's program is open to anyone with the required prerequisites. However, those interested in the structure and mission of homeland security agencies would benefit most. Those eligible and hoping to advance in the first responder, security, law enforcement or emergency management career sectors are highly encouraged to pursue this degree, according to Major Anarumo. There are a variety of course options within the program. The two mandatory courses are Crisis, Emergency, Disaster Management and Terrorism; and Foundations, Evolution and Globalization. Other course options include, Foundations of Asymmetric Warfare, Psychological Profiling of Terrorists, and Crime Mapping. To enroll in the homeland security master's program, students should already have a bachelor's degree. Stockton College also offers a dual BA/MA program that will allow students to complete their masters in a shorter amount of time, along with their bachelor degree. As in the private sector, obtaining higher education is key to career advancement according to Anarumo. "In short, it will advance your mind, and show your leadership that you are willing to improve yourself," said Major Anarumo.
