101 Critical Days of Summer begin May 25 Published May 22, 2007 MCGUIRE AFB, N.J. -- The "101 Critical Days of Summer" safety campaign begins May 25 and will run through Sept. 5. During this period, we will celebrate Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. This is our most critical period of the year when increased off duty injuries and fatalities occur due to increased activity and risk taking. During the 101 Days of 2006, the Air Force lost 18 Airmen, 13 of these mishaps were traffic related, four were recreational and one was on duty. During the summer, our Air Force members and families plan many exciting but potentially risky activities. Traveling, water sports and motorcycle operation are just a few of many summer activities that we participate in. Last year, Team McGuire suffered seven mishaps during the 101 Critical Days of Summer. Most of these accidents could have been prevented if the proper risk assessments for the situations were made. Know your abilities and do not take any unnecessary risks. Do not start a long driving trip after a day of work. Know your limitations when dealing with water activities; always swim with a buddy in an approved location. Be a qualified motorcycle operator and wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment. Alcohol and speed are key contributors to most of our traffic-related mishaps. If you decide to drink; don't drive. Contact Airmen Against Drunk Driving at 754-AADD (2233) or get a taxi ride. Let ACT be a guide to you when making off-duty decisions. "A" - Assess the situation and evaluate the risks. "C" - Consider the options to limit the risk. "T" - Take responsible and appropriate action. Risks can be minimized by assessing the situation and implementing responsible actions. If it is unsafe; stop what you and your buddies are doing. Use the team concept to remind one another of the importance of safety on and off duty. Let's enjoy our friends, families and summer activities responsibly so we can all return home safely -- ready for duty.
