Postal changes standardize base addresses Published Dec. 18, 2014 By Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Public Affairs JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- The U.S. Postal Service and the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, Official Mail Center have recently standardized the base's city name to "Joint Base MDL." Each area of the base will keep its zip code, McGuire - 08641, Dix - 08640, and Lakehurst - 08733, throughout the changeover. "This project has been in the works for four years," said 1st Lt. Elgin Lewis, 87th Communications Squadron Plans and Programs deputy. "The initial push was to update the outdated nomenclature being used to identify the once three separate installations by USPS. It will continue to help make JB MDL a single installation, rather than three. It's another barrier broken down on the road to the joint base being recognized as such." Several mistakes in addresses when mailed will delay deliveries throughout the transition. These include misspelled address, missing information, incorrect zip codes or city names. "It was also identified that due to some conflicts and discrepancies in addressing across the joint base the handling speed for mail was slower than it should be," Lewis said. "By having the addresses updated, mail will be handled with a higher level of precision by USPS and, in return, enhance the speed that joint base residents receive their mail." Residents shouldn't worry about holiday packages being delivered to old addresses, he added. The postal services will continue delivery to both during the changeover. Service members living in base housing should expect a letter from USPS containing their new mailing address. The USPS and Joint Base OMC advise residents to make sure all inbound mail has this address on file including, but not limited to, billing agencies, banks, magazine subscriptions and online retailers. "By residents helping the 87th CS with this transition, the USPS and the OMC will be able to increase the speed and accuracy that individuals receive their mail," said Lewis. "There is no official date which residents must be using the new address by, but we are pushing for everyone to have updated their address by Feb. 15, 2015."
