Col Catherine Schiavone U.S. Army Walson Medical Support Element JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- Nursing, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is the job of taking care of people who are sick, injured or old. According to a December 2013 honesty and ethics in professions Gallup poll, the nursing profession was rated the highest when it comes to honesty and ethics. The nursing profession is recognized and celebrated May 6-12 every year. The theme of this year for National Nurses' Week is Nurses Leading the Way. The history of the Army, Navy and Air Force nurse corps is replete with examples of exceptional nurses "leading the way" through caring and selfless service, expert mentorship and exceptional and dynamic leadership. JB MDL will celebrate National Nurses' Week with a number of activities 5-9 May in collaboration with our Army, Navy, Air Force and civilian registered nurses, licensed nurse practitioners, medical techs and combat medics. Highlighted events include: Friday May 2- Declaration of National Nurses' Week at the 87th Medical Group Clinic and a presentation of 87th MDG Coins to Nurse Tech-Medic attendees followed by a barbecue Monday May 5-Breakfast at the Joint Readiness Center Trivia and Bingo lunch at the 87th MDG Clinic Tuesday May 6-Blessing of the Hands at the Soldier's Chapel Massages and manicures at the 87th MDG Clinic Wednesday May 7- Lunch and learn hosted by Deborah Hospital at the 87th MDG Clinic Popcorn and ice cream social at the Joint Readiness Center Thursday May 8- Scrub top fashion show at the 87th MDG Clinic Joint base bowling activity at the Bowling Center on Dix Friday May 9-Luncheon at the Military and Family Support Center featuring guest speaker Alison Gibson, State of New Jersey Department of Health Division of Health Facilities Evaluation & Licensing assistant commissioner. Nurses practice in diverse settings across the world and touch lives in countless ways every day.
