Members of the 87th Mission Support Group welcomed its newest leader during a change of command ceremony here July 13.

Col. Troy Koepnick assumed command from Col. Charles Kelm as Joint Base MDL and 87th Air Base Wing Commander Col. Frederick Thaden presided over the ceremony.

At MDL and deployed locations, 87th MSG members provide logistics and contracting management, fire and force protections, communications, passenger and cargo movement, and crisis action, planning and response.

"To command the Mission Support Group has been one of the greatest honors and privileges of my life," said Kelm, addressing his former command. "Not for individual recognition, but because it was an opportunity to serve with the men and women of the MSG."

Kelm noted the dedication and sacrifice of the mission support service members, emphasizing their devotion to not just the 87th Air Base Wing mission, but to the MDL mission as a whole.

"There is no small task in this group," Kelm said. "Every single person here plays a vital role, is a vital link in our chain of defense."

Before relinquishing command, Kelm addressed Koepnick - a fellow Texas A&M Aggie.

"It's been 20 years since you and I walked the quad together," said Kelm to his successor. "You have an amazing group here."

Taking the podium, Koepnick addressed his new command and pledged to continue supporting the joint base mission.

"The [MDL] mission is our mission," Koepnick said. "All the way."

Koepnick left all standing orders in effect, and left his new command with words of encouragement.

"I am truly humbled to serve you, and serve with you, as we continue supporting our mission partners."
