Service member spotlight: long line of warriors Published April 3, 2013 By Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Public Affairs JOINT BASE-MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- Spc. Timothy Andariese, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 72nd Field Artillery Brigade infantryman, is the joint base's featured service member of the week. Andariese hails from Unadilla, Mich. Q: Why did you join the military? A: I come from a long line of warriors. I grew up hearing stories about my ancestors, their fights and struggles. Especially, the Americans fighting in the Whiskey Rebellion against what they believed to be tyranny, against the Red Coats in our revolution, for the Union in the Civil War and against the Nazis in World War II. Stories of my ancestors inspired me then and inspire me today, which is why the notion of military service came very naturally. Q: What is your job and what is its impact on the mission? A: My job as an operations specialist is to receive, log and disseminate information pertinent to the mission. Q: Do you have any past and current family members in the military? A: Military service is the most salient tradition in my families. Q: Who most inspires you? A: My grandfather, Richard, most inspires me. He was born and raised in Carlstadt, N.J. As a teenager, he enlisted in the Army as a combat engineer during World War II and actually in-processed here, at then Camp Dix. The things he saw and the stories he told inspired me. I can't imagine liberating a concentration camp, let alone three, but, he never complained. It really makes me think twice before I complain about anything, and appreciate comforts a lot more. Q: What is one thing you'd like your fellow service members to take away or understand about the military? A: The military is a giant machine with many parts. Every career field is necessary for the mission, the fight ... and we're in this together.
