Operation Santa Claus brightens yuletide spirits Published Dec. 17, 2009 By Steve Snyder Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Public Affairs Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst -- During the holiday season, toys tend to mesmerize the young. They also attract Vince Bowker's attention. Mr. Bowker and his team of volunteers run Operation Santa Claus in Building 5353, just off Texas Avenue on Dix. Their mission to provide new and reconditioned toys to children of needy families in the area. Volunteers sort, clean and repair donated toys throughout the year. The Federal Correctional Institution repairs broken bicycles, returning them to Operation Santa Claus just in time for the season of giving. Mr. Bowker said he has been lending Santa a helping hand since 1996. Happily, he remains committed to bringing cheers to as many children as possible during the holiday season. He hopes Operation Santa Claus will provide two or three toys to at least 1,000 children this year. This is a good goal considering last year's toy operation did not do as well as expected because of the area's economic downturn. The Operation Santa Claus building is currently open from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. during weekdays. Later hours may be scheduled with the approval of the executive board based on needs. Permanent drop boxes can also be found at various locations on Dix. Mr. Bowker said locations could expand to McGuire in the future should he obtain more volunteers.
