The Start Smart Sports Development Program, part of the McGuire Youth Programs, is currently registering children, ages 3-5, for its fall/ winter semester at the McGuire Youth Center.

The program is a proven instructional program that prepares children for the world of organized sports without the threat of competition or fear of getting hurt. Parents work with their children in a supportive environment to learn all of the basic skills, from catching and throwing, to kicking and batting.

"The program really helps children get ready for sports and have fun doing it," said Kevin J Hansen, McGuire Youth Center Sports and Fitness director. "We're really happy to offer this nationally acclaimed program to the McGuire community, and hopefully, many children can benefit from the program."

Mr. Hansen said there are several benefits to participating in the program, including helping children build confidence and self esteem, providing a fun and positive early experience in sports, and allowing parents and children to spend additional quality time together.

"This is an outstanding program for parents who have young children, especially for those who are too young to sign up for the older leagues," he said. "The children have the opportunity to participate in sports without fear of a competitive atmosphere, giving them their time to shine. Plus, the children get to spend time with their parents and show them what they've learned and how much they've improved."

The Start Smart Sports Development Program class is held Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. at the McGuire Youth Center, Falcon Courts North, through Oct. 24. Each week, the class becomes increasingly more difficult as the class progresses and children show improvement.

Registration is currently underway at the youth center for upcoming classes. For more information or to sign up, call the McGuire Youth Programs at (609) 754-5437.
