Listening to the music of the season

Walking through Wal-Mart, I was struck by a strange yet familiar sound -- holiday music.
No doubt this was a reminder of the ever dwindling number of shopping days, but also a signal of the many celebrations by varying faiths.

Hanukkah commemorates the Maccabean reclamation and rededication of the Temple.

The Hijira marks the start of a new year in Islam.

During Christmas, many reflect on the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Each holiday echoes the beliefs and traditions of specific communities while reflecting common elements benefiting all people.

One important value is hope: the inspiration that tomorrow is filled with promise even if current events seem daunting.

Another element is transformation: the ability to move forward beyond past challenges.

Third there is love: shared by a community which unites individuals.

As warfighters engaged in defending freedom we hear many sounds, from the laughter of fellow Airmen, to comments of concerned family members, to the ever present demands which motivate excellent performance.

Reflecting on the sounds of holiday music offers moments to seek peace through potentially lonely, fearful or overwhelming times. The melodies of holiday songs remind that there are always reasons to hope, seek positive change, and embrace an ever present community for support.
