Remember Service Before Self through the holidays

As we approach the upcoming holiday season, we typically hear about and are presented with several opportunities to support various charities or causes. Thanksgiving reminds us of all the good things we have, whether they be good health, family, freedom or financial security. At the same time, it reminds us that not everyone is fortunate to enjoy the same benefits. While voluntary, helping those who are less fortunate than we are is more than just the conscientious or moral thing to do ... it's important to the safety and security of our community, the Air Force and our Nation.

Like it or not, some of our fellow citizens could really use some assistance. Additionally, many governments around the world simply don't have the resources to provide even basic needs of food and shelter to their people. Without assistance, these tragedies will not go away ... often, people endure unimaginable suffering and eventually become even greater burdens on society. As Airmen, we have sworn an oath to put our Service Before Self in defense of our country "from all enemies, foreign and domestic." This enemy doesn't always carry a gun or wear a uniform.

Many charities do great work helping people, especially defenseless children, overcome hardship to become contributing members of society. Others help fund treatment for diseases that, if cured, would not only save lives, but allow precious resources to be reallocated to other pressing needs. Poverty and human suffering are often the root cause of crime and conflict both domestically and internationally. These people need our help, and I submit that it is part of our duty to step up to the plate. By helping to alleviate hunger, poverty or homelessness for even one person or family, you are reducing the collective burden on society and providing for the security of not only the country, but potentially the world.

The Combined Federal Campaign, while not the only means to contribute, is a convenient way to help a charity of your choice. It is easy to make a donation or to set up a monthly contribution from your paycheck. If you choose to contribute, I encourage you to identify a specific charity or cause that is important to you, or one in the local community, to receive your contributions. Perhaps someone in your family or a friend has been the benefit of a particular charity.

Often times, what is needed more than money is our time. Current operations tempo and family commitments demand a lot of our time, but volunteering can make a huge difference in the lives of the less fortunate and is personally rewarding as well. By volunteering in the local community, you are also being a positive representative of the Air Force and your unit. There is no greater gift that we can give to someone in need than our time.

We talk about leadership in the military. Leaders take care of their people, set the example for their subordinates, and help those in need. Be a leader by setting the example for your children and stepping up to help someone in need. You can make a difference.
