Celebrating Armed Forces Day: Saturday Published May 22, 2007 By Col. Rick Martin 305th Air Mobility Wing commander MCGUIRE AFB, N.J. -- As we celebrate Armed Forces Day this weekend, I'd like to express my sincerest thanks to all who played a role in planning and executing McGuire's 2007 Air Expo last weekend. I couldn't be more proud of our "Can Do" Team at McGuire! And the good fortune of gorgeous weather was an added blessing! I've received numerous commendations for our attention to security, the precision and gusto of the performances, and the "care and feeding" of our McGuire and community guests. The airshow was not only a great demonstration of teamwork among McGuire, but also the joint teamwork with Fort Dix and Lakehurst as we continue to evolve into a joint base. Current efforts for joint consolidation among the local New Jersey military communities have enabled the creation of a multi-agency force, one capable of handling a multitude of readiness functions. The culmination of McGuire, Fort Dix and NAES Lakehurst will exponentially increase the indispensable value of 'jointness,' redefining its very existence. Though we are writing history to shape such terminology, this theme is witnessed throughout military training and organizations, specifically routed in one such period of military history -- 1949. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman led efforts to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force recognition days. He aspired to create a single day for Americans to express gratitude to servicemembers for their unfaltering patriotism. This year, we celebrate the 58th anniversary as we continue our joint journey and further integration of our armed services. As Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, we have an inherent responsibility to defend the principles which this great country was founded upon. We continue to project America as the world's premier military force; defending liberty and freeing those trapped under tyranny. Take great pride and responsibility knowing that you are an essential member in this profession of arms -- missions could not be performed without your dedication and expertise. I salute you on this Armed Forces Day. And speaking of salutes, we extend a hearty farewell to Maj. Gen. Scott and Jackie Gray, U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center commander, as they head to Washington, D.C., to continue their tremendous service and leadership on the air staff. Team McGuire also extends a warm welcome to Brig. Gen. Kip and Sue Self as they assume the reins of command at the Expeditionary Center. We look forward to hosting Gen. Duncan J. McNabb, commander, Air Mobility Command, for the EC Change of Command Wednesday. Thanks for all you do for our country, for the families who support us and the communities which embrace us. I look forward to seeing fellow Harley riders this weekend at the "ride for Freedom." If I miss you there, I'll see you at the Wing Commander Calls Monday as we emphasize safety for the 101 Critical Days of Summer. Can Do!
