Team McGuire: Get Energized! Published Feb. 2, 2007 By Col. Rick Martin 305 AMW commander MCGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. -- Remember the days when you would grab a soda and just throw the can into the trash (without a second thought) when you were finished? Well, those days have fallen by the wayside. Our recycling culture has transformed our habit patterns and environmental mindset. Now we're in the process of transforming our energy habits and efficiency mindset. Last week we had the distinguished opportunity to host the Department of Energy, Efficiency Expert Evaluation (E4) Team on their inaugural trip to a Department of Defense facility. In the coming months, this team of energy professionals will travel to numerous installations to help the DoD become more energy efficient--and it started right here at the "Can Do" Wing and Team McGuire! The E4 team surveyed more than 1.2 million square feet of base facilities, (which represents 24% of our total square footage) and identified a number of ways to help decrease energy consumption. Our Mission Support Group will take the lead on major energy conservation projects such as synthetic fuel, low speed vehicles, and HVAC controls. However, the team also identified many simple, no-cost measures that each Airman "can do" to help save energy. For example, we should turn off lights if not needed, close or open windows as appropriate for the time of year, and notify the building manager of broken doors, windows, or water fountains. I'm proud to report that the E4 team was extremely impressed with Team McGuire's "Can Do" attitude. In fact, Mr Aimone, the Air Force's Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Installations, and Mission Support, presented us with a $20,000 check to kick-start our energy conservation measures! Thanks to all who helped to make this E4 visit a success. Speaking of success, efficient use of energy is critical to mission success! I want to thank each of you for doing your part toward energy conservation. Get charged - energize your energy awareness and efficiency meter today and everyday! Can Do!
