It's summer time! When the weather is gorgeous and the days are long, we are naturally drawn to the water. Whether it's a water park, the pool, the river or the ocean you're headed to this summer, there are things to keep in mind as you plan your outing.

No matter where you're going this summer, check the weather first. If it's going to storm and lightning is forecasted, it's best to stay home and reschedule your outing. If the forecast looks clear, make sure you pack sunscreen and enough drinking water for the whole family to avoid sunburn and dehydration.

When we're playing around in the water, we often don't realize how much we're sweating so we need to increase our water intake. If you wait until you're thirsty to drink water, it might be too late. Don't consume alcohol when you're spending a day in the sun and water. Alcohol impairs your judgment and dehydrates you.

If you're planning a trip to the ocean, there are many things to be cautious of including rip currents, jellyfish, sharks and sand bars. Also be aware of other animals you might encounter along the river, such as dogs, coyotes and snakes. They are drawn to water too. Always swim with a buddy to mitigate the hazards of the ocean and other bodies of water with currents. If you're a beginner swimmer, use some means of floatation device and take lessons before trying any new water sports.

Stay safe and enjoy the water!
