Daddy Boot Camp nurtures new fathers

If you are a military member, you have been through boot camp to make you strong and fit, ready to serve and lead your troops. Being a dad requires a different kind of strength and leadership; that's where Daddy Boot Camp comes in.

Offered monthly by Family Advocacy, in conjunction with the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Daddy Boot Camp is an informal class for expectant and new fathers, stepfathers and adoptive fathers. The class is open to all branches of military service, as well as spouses.

"I see fathers bringing a unique perspective to the table," said Melodye Giovanni, Family Advocacy Outreach Manager, adding that fathers play a vital role in a child's progression into adulthood.

Because some first-time fathers can find themselves intimidated with the prospect of being in charge of a new life, this class will help first-time dads deal with their new role.
Instead of instruction on changing diapers and bottle feeding, new fathers will learn techniques they can use to help them in their roles as fathers and further educate them on making a positive impact on their child's life.

"This is not the baby basics class," said Master Sgt. Robert Day, Airman and Family Readiness Superintendent. "It's a basic training class for new dads." The class will help new fathers become leaders and mentors to their children, he said. Master Sgt. Day is the co-facilitator of the class with Ms. Giovanni.

The next class will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on May 28 at the Family Place Education and Training Center, Falcon Courts North. Pre-registration is required. The class is offered once a month. Call (609) 754-9680 for more information.
