Navy Petty Officer First Class Anthony Thayer, Fleet Logistics Support Squadrons Six Four, operations department leading petty officer, is the joint base's featured service member of the week. Thayer hails from Springfield, Ohio.

Q: Why did you join the military?

A: Patriotism runs deep in my family, and serving my country was ingrained into me at a young age. I have always wanted to do my part to ensure our country's freedom. As a member of the world's greatest Navy, I can do that while seeking new challenges, gaining knowledge and partaking in great adventures. Some of my friends thought I was crazy and tried desperately to talk me out of joining. They told me I didn't know what I was getting into. I ignored those skeptics and have never regretted a single moment of my service.

Q: What is your job and what is its impact on the mission?

A: I am the operations department leading petty officer and loadmaster instructor for VR-64. I am responsible for worldwide scheduling and mission tasking for four Navy C-130T Hercules aircrafts, 62 aircrew and daily operational commitments for VR-64. As an instructor, I train new aircrew in general aircraft knowledge, systems, weight and balance, loading/unloading of passengers and cargo and safety of flight.

Q: Do you have any past or current family members in the military?

A: I come from a long line of family members that have served in all branches of the military, as far back as the Revolutionary War. Also, I am proud to report as of July 29 my son will continue the tradition as he leaves for Air Force boot camp. Hooyah!

Q: Who most inspires you?

A: My father (retired Air Force) was my greatest inspiration, not only as a father but as a friend. He exemplified dedication and loyalty to this country, upholding tradition and respect for the uniform, while balancing military and family life to be the best father he could. Though he only saw me serve briefly, I know he is looking down on me from above and is proud.

Q: What is one thing you'd like your fellow service members to take away or understand about the military?

A: The military is one big family, we take care of one another. Work hard, study, be a leader/mentor to others and you will have a fulfilling career!
