Historic flight
Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne speaks during the first C-17 Synthetic Fuel Transcontinental Flight ceremony here Dec. 17. Left to right, Maj. Gen. Frederick Roggero, director of air, space and information operations, Kevin Billings, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for environment, safety and health, and Col. Balan Ayyar, 305th Air Mobility Wing commander, were also guest speakers during the event. The aircraft from McChord AFB, Wash., powered by a 50/50 blend of synthetic fuel and JP-8, landed here on the anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first flight, 104 years ago. The transcontinental flight was a demonstration of the fuel being used to certify the entire Air Force fleet including ground vehicles. (U.S. Air Force courtesy photo)
