Falconers, natural predators keep airways safe

Falconer Andrew Barnes receives Nantucket, exhausted and ready to eat, after a 30-minute flight March 23. Peregrine falcons average 25-34 mph in travel flight and can reach speeds up to 69 mph in direct pursuit of prey. During its spectacular hunting stoop, or dive, from heights of more than .61 miles, the Peregrine may reach speeds of more than 234 mph as it drops toward its prey.
