305 SFS military working dogs

Senior Airman Mike McCabe, 818th Contingency Response Group Raven, brushes Polo, 305th SFS military working dog. Airman McCabe is “on loan” from the 818th CRG and is scheduled to cross train and become a handler in March. Polo will be adopted soon. Although Polo is up for adoption, he is still groomed and exercised daily. Military working dogs can work for up to 12 years, then usually “retire” because of health reasons and are put up for adoption. The dog’s handler usually has the first option to adopt, but they can also be adopted by civilian law enforcement agencies with more relaxed operation standards than the military. All adoptions are screened and approval is only granted through Lackland AFB, Texas. (U.S. Air Force photo/Wayne Russell)
